Bell Tower and Drum Tower in Beijing
Bell and drum were used for telling time in ancient dynasties, bell tower and drum tower were available in all main cities in China, so people could live and work regularly by listenning the bell and drum sounds when there was no other way to keep track of the time.
They had different rules to pound drum and bell in different dynasties, in Qing Qianlong Dynasty, the night watchmen should pound drum first, and then pound bell in every evening around 19pm to 21pm, after the bell ring, the gates of the city would be locked. In the early morning around 3am to 5am, they would do the same thing, and then open the gates of the city. Besides telling time, the Bell and Drum Towers were also used for chronicle of events and military alarm.
Beijing Bell Tower and Drum Tower are situated at the northern end of the central axis of the City, both are two floors'stone towers, visiters can go up to the second floor through very steep stone stairs.
The bell in Beijing Bell Tower is the heaviest one in China, with 7.02 meters high and weight of 63 tons.
On the second floor of the Drum Tower, it contains an exhibition area, one big drum and 24 smaller drums. There are drum beating performances during the visiting time.
