Tashilhunpo Monastery is the biggest temple in the Shigatse area. It located on the west of city, next to the Nyima Mountain.
Tashilhunpo Monastery was frist built in 1447 by Gedun Drub under the support of local nobles. Gedun Drub became the First Dalai Lama. In 1600, the forth Panchan Lama enlarged this temple. In 1980s, the Tashilhunpo monastery was opened to the public.
Tashilhunpo Monastery has an area 150,000 square meters with 3 kilometres wall surrounded. There are many halls here:
Jamba Chyenmu 'The Maitreya Temple is the tallest building of the monastery. It houses a gigantic 26.2 meters Maitreya Buddha statue.
Gudong is The Panchen Lama's Palace.
The main chanting hall contains the throne of the Panchen Lama and two connected chapels.
Sutra Hall is the repository room.
The Gyeni Chanting Hall is a debating place.
Ngang College is for musical instruments.
This temple attracted a lot of visitors.
